There are two parts to KL's downtown really - there's the modern part of KL with so many skyscrapers around you that Manhattan would be envious.
And then there's older historic part of KL, the traditional "centre" with Freedom Square (Dataran Merdeka in Malay) and Petaling Street as its main points of attraction and a lot of older, British style buildings with really old shops and cafes.
This is certainly the most "Asian" and "exotic" part of KL with roads choked with cars and the heat from the sun and the cars and food and stalls selling knockoff football jerseys, sunglasses, watches and shoes. There is a charm about this area which attracts plenty of tourists and locals too.
This is the place to go if you just want a pair of sunglasses that works, but has the Oakley, Ray-Ban branding. Just please don't pay RM100 for one. Try and bargain. RM15 is quite reasonable really given you are buying fakes.
And this is really needed after walking through both parts of KL in the heat of day.
Anyway:
Petaling Street
Jalan Tan Cheng Lock, a key thoroughfare into the city - this is the buzz and choke I was talking about.
Kasturi Mall - this recently opened next to Central Market and is supposed to be a bit of a "tamer" version of Petaling Street
New and old in the historic part of KL
