Look Who I Found in Singapore!

There's this theory of mine that people who move to a new country, city or town make much more of an effort to connect to that place than the locals.

Tonight, that theory was proven right; my Invercargill-born friend, Anna, who moved to Singapore for work 7 months ago, has taken to Singapore like water off a duck's back and embraced the (much more superior) local cuisine at one of the suburban hawker centres, where all Singaporeans go to for food, rather than the expensive, touristy fake stuff along the Singapore River or in those fake arcades that have popped up recently.

Well done, Anna, though - a lot of people from the West don't usually go to such places but to know where to get the best hokkien mee and dumplings is rather impressive.

By the way, Tiger is an excellent under-rated beer.

Anyway here are some photos from today.

Kampung Glam - this was traditionally the Malay part of Singapore, but coming from KL, it's a pale imitation really but still alright.

Little India - now this district is actually very authentic and definitely feels like you're in India.

Finally, ah famous Orchard Road.. This is ION Orchard, possibly the flashiest shopping centre in Singapore at the moment right now. Inside though, it's obviously more shops and more shops and a few food places and then more shops - it seems that Singaporeans and Malaysians live to eat and shop, a view shared by Anna. Anyway ION is still to be admired..

Oh this intersection here between Orchard Road and Paterson/Scotts Road used to the busiest pedestrian crossing in Singapore - then they built an underpass and now it's just this. That's Wheelock Place over there which used to have a great bookstore - now it just has a Marks N Spencer.

Finally hats off to the MRT, one of the most efficient and best public transport systems in the world that has gotten a lot better thanks to the completion of more lines. Here it is on a packed day on the way to probably the busiest station in Singapore, Orchard.
