Dresden

Dresden is a definitely worthwhile day trip or stopover between the former imperial route between Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. What makes it more interesting is the fact that the original city that was once called the Florence of the Elbe was completely flattened in World War II - the standout Frauenkirche was only reconsecrated in 2005 having been left in ruin as recently as 1993.

Dresden is the standout Baroque city in Germany and there's more to come with more buildings to be built in the original Baroque style pre-WW2. It just shows you that you can build anything you want in this day of age - now if only they could figure out how to make Baroque or Neo-Roman earthquake proof, then we should try and get Christchurch to rebuild in the similar vein as Dresden.
