I've officially concluded now that to truly experience Rome, you need to see the Colosseum, Vatican City and the other famous sites, eat Italian food "not" at the places tourists eat at and get ripped off by "gladiators" or overly friendly people near the Spanish Steps.
My advice for you if you're planning a trip to Rome, have some spare change as insurance for these people.
Yes, you will get pictures with gladiators, yes you will get a lucky charm bracelet tied around you which I hope is a good sign, but it will cost you.
Thankfully, my appetite - and time - for museums has dissipated somewhat since two exhausting tours of the Uffizi and the Vatican Museum, meaning I've spent less on museums so far and more on food and lots of gelato.
