I've always liked Vienna as a city. It surprised me last time I was here with its sumptuous art and culture. Shame it feels like a stopover en route to more exotic places opened up since the end of the Cold War like Budapest, Prague and Krakow.
This time, I went for the famous cafes. The first one, Demel is famous for its chocolate, pastries & of course, apple strudel (apfelstrudel). Dining inside it's luxurious interior even if it's just for a drink and snack is an experience. The other one, Sacher, prides itself on making Austria's most famous cake, Sacher-torte, a lovely honey-orange cake with chocolate icing. Again it's all about the experience and hey it's nice to know where the idea for Starbucks & Mojo started from.
Vienna does have the most underrated art gallery in the world too. The Obere Belvedere's collection is absolutely beautiful. While Gustav Klimt's Kiss is to the Belvedere what the Mona Lisa is to the Louvre & the Birth of Venus to the Uffizi, there are heaps of other genuine stars inside the former Habsburg palace.
Vienna of course is in Germanic land meaning everything is orderly and to the point. Viennese German is probably the most ringing dialect of them all - the U-Bahn announcer voice is the most memorable.
Like Milan, Vienna is the sort of place you'd be able to do in a day and is more of a city you'd want to live in rather than visit - after all it is often top of the list of most livable cities in the world. The party hostel, beers, schnitzel and crazy drinking games make the nights quite an experience though!
