If day one in Rome was all about the gladiators, day two was definitely about the post-gladiator Catholic era.
I had the fortune of seeing the Pope as it was a Wednesday morning when he made his weekly address to the crowd. This was an exhibition of Catholic pilgrimage like I'd never seen - there were so many groups from all over the world who had journeyed to the Vatican to see the Pope and St Peter's Basilica just for the week. So many choir groups too.
The scale of the Vatican just illustrates the wide scale of Rome as a city - it is really only a small part of the city? Yet it's museums and cathedrals make it seem enormous. The Vatican Museum itself is quite a beast.
As for the Sistine Chapel, well you just wonder if things could be organized and done a bit better. The ceiling and walls are absolutely mind blowing but the security and absolute minding is just a bit too much. If they were so particular about silence and photos, why have so many people in there? Of course tourists are going to want to talk and take photos. They're on holiday not at school or in jail. I just wonder if they really know what they're after.
Anyway here are the photos..
