Venice and Ciao Italia!

Ah Venice.. What a way to finish my highly exciting yet equally exhausting 10-day Italian odyssey.

There have been plenty of cathedrals visited, a few hot afternoons spent inside the greatest museums in the world, lots of pizza and gelato along with other great food consumed, and a few rip-offs from con artists in Rome. It's been a pretty exciting time finding la dolce vita in the land of Romans and Leonardo da Vinci.

It was also my first real tour of Italy - my last trip only took me to the northern part for about a week. Thus, I had more insight into the Italian life and culture. Yes it's hectic but it somehow works. And the people are pretty nice.

I won't pick a favorite city in Rome as I quite like all of them including that ugly duckling, Milan with its stunning Duomo and Gallerias.

Verona and Siena definitely stand out as little priceless wonders and a welcome relief from their over touristy big brothers.

Florence has a big city feel in a compact area with its cheap and tasty food giving it the edge.

Rome surprised me though - it isn't as big as people make it out to be and I wish I had more time for the city's real heart around Piazza Navona.

And then Venice; I finally can see the place as a living city rather than a big theme park after walking through the quiet streets of Cannaregio and Dorsadurso.

So la dolce vita and gelato will be missed as I head back into Germanic and Slavic lands briefly but ciao grazie Italia!

  1. A favourite city in Rome? Are there any other than the Vatican?
